[Heatman nods along as he watched Gold Foot with big, bright optics]

What kind of brother are you? I don't know what kind I am. I try to save up jokes to tell them and I draw pictures of them on the inside of my box where I'll see them no matter what but I, um. I mess up a lot. I do stuff that don't make much sense when people explain that I'm confused, or um-

[He falters, and offers a shaky smile as his arms stop swinging] Or my coding makes me do things that aren't... that aren't good. Dr. Wily- [He shrugs and looks away] I don't think a lot of people agree with how he made us. Made me. Is all.

[Another shrug, and he looks back as he nibbles at the fingers of one of his armored gloves]

So, um. What kind are you?

"Or my coding makes me do things that aren't good."

Oh, Foot can relate to that. The soldier takes a deep, shuddering vent and finally offers to let Heatman inside the room. He doesn't answer the question at first. Instead he paces, his finials flicking, and plays with his fingers.

"I'm not a good brother." He says it slowly and carefully, coming to a stop in front of Heatman. "I'm not a good person. I didn't remember that Captain-- That Gold Arm was my brother when I first encountered him here. I attacked my partner and wounded him. I had orders to kill one of Gold Arm's friends."

He turns to face Heatman, his mouth pursed into a thin line. "I am doing what I can to atone for my actions but it is... difficult. There are many things I don't yet understand, and I fear I never will. But I don't suspect I will ever be 'good'."

Heatman nibbled more at his fingers before pulling his gloved hands just far enough away that they didn't muffle what he wanted to say. "I think- I don't know what to think," he admitted. "Everybody has been telling me that it isn't my fault if my coding makes me do the bad things, but- but I don't see how!"

"I killed one of my brothers. I went to his room and burned his blankets and where we made forts and didn't stop until he was dead. He's back now, but- but if people say that isn't my fault, I think I can believe that can be true for you maybe? So- so can we trade? You think nice things about me even if it isn't really true, and I'll think nice things about you?"

Gold Foot rocks on his heels briefly, and then slowly lowers himself into a crouch in front of the smaller bot. It doesn't take a genius to put two and two together. This little bot was the reason his friend, his not-quite-officially little brother, died the way he did. And it takes a tremendous amount of effort for him to breathe through the static anger and face Heatman with the gentleness he deserved.

It is what Gold Arm would do for him. And Gold Arm sent Heatman to him for... for some reason. Maybe so they both can grow from their mistakes.

Gold Foot would not make his aniki into a liar by lashing out at this little one who clearly already regretted his actions.

"I won't say that it isn't your fault," he says gently. He holds out a hand for Heat, just in case the smaller bot wants to hold onto something. "Our coding is who we are. All we can do is try to be better than we were the day before. Sargent, er... Rung told me something similar. We were made one way, but the beauty is that we can change. If you can feel regret for what you did, and I can try to atone, then we aren't locked into one set path."

He manages a small smile, though it doesn't quite reach his optics. He's still figuring out how to express his emotions in a healthy way. "I think we can manage that. We can work on being better together, because that's what our brothers want for us."
